Andiamo, in Orange: A Closer Look at the Vespa That Comes With a '69 VW Bus

Step-through frame, steel bodywork, an automatic transmission and a seat for two, custom-painted to match a restored 1969 VW Bus camper. VanLife is giving away both. Entries close November 12.

The Bus gets the headline. But one of the best parts of VanLife's fall Grand Prize is the smaller orange machine parked next to it: a classic Italian Vespa, custom-painted to match the restored 1969 VW Bus it comes with.

So this one is about the scooter. Below is every Vespa feature the giveaway page lists, one at a time, and what each one means in practice. The Bus, the gear and the cash come after.

Feature 1A step-through frame

The Vespa is a step-through scooter. There is no tank or bar between your knees. You step through the open middle of the frame and sit down. Getting on is a step, not a climb.

Feature 2Steel bodywork

The giveaway page describes the body as iconic steel Vespa bodywork. It is also the canvas for the paint: the steel has been custom-painted orange to match the VW Bus, so the two read as a set from across a field.

In profile: the step-through frame, the saddle and the curved rear bodywork.

Feature 3An automatic transmission

The Vespa has an automatic transmission, so there are no gears to choose. That is a neat contrast with the Bus, which uses a four-speed manual. In the Bus you work the shifter; on the Vespa you just ride.

Feature 4A rounded headlight and a leg shield

Up front is a classic rounded headlight and a front leg shield, the curved panel that sits ahead of the rider's shins. Together they make up the scooter's familiar front end.

Feature 5A seat for two

The two-person saddle seat and rear passenger footrests mean a second rider has a proper place to sit and somewhere to put their feet. Park the Bus, and two people can head into town on one scooter.

Feature 6Classic Vespa instrumentation

The gauges are classic Vespa instrumentation, a styling match for the classic VW dashboard and instrumentation in the Bus. Two dashboards, one look.

The other halfThe Bus it was painted to match

The Vespa's partner is a restored '69 VW Type 2 camper, with early split window styling, round headlights and the same custom orange. Its engine is a 1.6L air-cooled flat-four, mounted in the rear and turning the rear wheels. Inside are a rear living and camping area, storage, and a bed that folds down.

On top of that is a $10,000 cash award. The approximate retail value of everything together is $100,000.

Before the first rideWhat the rules say

The Official Rules state that the Sponsor makes no warranty about any prize, including its mechanical condition, and the prize vehicle is awarded "AS IS." Any cost of accepting or using it that the rules leave out is the winner's to cover, so check your local requirements for riding a scooter before you plan that first trip into town.
