What Does the Spec List of This Restored ’69 VW Bus Actually Mean?

Rear-mounted, air-cooled, four-speed, rear-wheel drive: the listing for a restored orange 1969 VW Type 2 Bus camper, explained one line at a time. Entries close November 12.

A spec list is a short way to describe a vehicle, and it only helps if you know the words. This one is about a restored 1969 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus camper, so here is what each line of its listing means.

Every item below comes from the giveaway page. Where a term needs explaining, the explanation is plain and general. Nothing here promises how the Bus performs.

Listing line 1The engine: "1.6L air-cooled flat-four," rear-mounted

Read it in pieces. Rear-mounted means the engine sits at the back of the vehicle. 1.6L is the engine's size. Air-cooled means air, not liquid coolant, carries heat away. Flat-four means four cylinders laid out flat, two on each side.

The engine bay at the rear, with the lid raised.

Listing line 2"Rear-wheel drive" and "4-speed manual transmission"

Rear-wheel drive means the rear wheels receive the engine's power. With the engine at the back too, the listing describes the whole drivetrain in one place. A 4-speed manual means four forward gears that the driver selects with a lever.

Listing line 3The windshield

The giveaway page describes a large panoramic split window windshield, and the same listing mentions early split window styling. That describes the glass at the front of the cab, and the listing says nothing more about it.

The front of the Bus, with round headlights, chrome VW badging and a side door open.

Listing line 4"Sliding side access door"

A sliding door moves along the body instead of swinging out on hinges. The listing also names the "rear living and camping area" it opens onto, so the door is about getting in and out of the camper section. That is the access point for the rear living and camping area, which the listing pairs with interior storage and a fold-down sleeping setup.

Listing line 5"Classic VW dashboard and instrumentation"

"Instrumentation" means the gauges. The listing calls them classic, and the cab photo above shows the dashboard they sit in. The listing calls the dashboard and instrumentation classic and says nothing more.

Reading between the linesWhat a listing does not say

The giveaway page does not list mileage or mechanical condition. The Official Rules fill that gap: the vehicle is awarded "AS IS" without warranty, and the Sponsor makes no representation about its quality or mechanical condition.

The rules add one more caution: some states, counties or towns have safety or emissions requirements the Bus might not satisfy. The winner looks those up before accepting.

Common questions

What does "restored" tell me about this Bus?

The Official Rules describe the prize as a restored 1969 Volkswagen. They do not describe the work done, and they award the vehicle "AS IS" without warranty.

Does the listing say how the Bus drives?

No. It lists parts and features only. Nothing on the giveaway page or in the Official Rules makes a claim about how it drives.

Is the Bus the whole prize?

No. The Grand Prize is one package with the Bus, a Vespa, a travel bundle and a $10,000 cash award. The rules value the whole package at about $100,000 (ARV).

Who pays for registration?

Costs for registration and licensing of the automobile are the winner's responsibility, per the Official Rules.
